This notice explains what happens to your information when you visit this website. It is written for visitors to the site, and it is separate from my Client Privacy Notice, which covers how I handle the personal data of people who use my counselling service. If you go on to become a client, that separate notice will apply to your counselling records.
I am Keith Johnston, a counsellor in private practice trading as Counselling With Keith, and I am the data controller responsible for this website and for the information described in this notice. I take the privacy of your information seriously. This notice is governed by the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025.
What This Website Collects
This is an information website, and the only information it records is the standard technical data that any web server keeps: your device’s IP address, the type of browser you are using, the pages you view and the date and time of your visit. I use this solely to keep the site secure and running properly, and my lawful basis for doing so is legitimate interests, namely the operation and protection of my website.
What a Cookie Is
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device, usually to remember a setting you have chosen.
The Cookies This Website Uses
The only cookies this site sets are two that remember your accessibility choices. If you use the accessibility toolbar to turn on high-contrast mode or a larger font, the site stores that choice so that it remains in place as you move between pages.
| Cookie | What it does | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
a11y-high-contrast | Remembers that you have turned on high-contrast mode | Deleted when you close your browser |
a11y-larger-fontsize | Remembers that you have turned on a larger font | Deleted when you close your browser |
Both are set by this website, not by any third party, and neither is used for any other purpose.
Why I Do Not Ask for Your Consent to These
Under UK law, specifically the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, cookies that do nothing more than remember a display setting you have chosen do not require your consent. That is the only thing these two cookies do.
Removing These Cookies
You can remove them at any time by switching the accessibility settings back off using the toolbar, or by clearing the cookies in your browser. The site will work exactly as before; it will simply return to its standard appearance.
No Analytics, Advertising or Tracking
This website does not use Google Analytics, advertising cookies, social media trackers or any tool that follows you across other websites. The fonts are served from my own server rather than from a third party, so reading these pages does not share your visit with anyone.
Booking an Appointment
My online booking page (book.counsellingwithkeith.com) is provided through Proton AG. Any cookies used on that page are set by Proton under its own privacy and cookie policy, which you can read at proton.me/legal/privacy. The booking details you enter are handled in line with my Client Privacy Notice. Proton’s servers are located in Switzerland, which the UK recognises as providing an adequate level of data protection, so your details remain protected when processed there.
Sharing Your Information
I do not sell your information, and I do not share it with anyone for marketing. The only circumstances in which I would share the limited technical data described above are where I am required to by law, for example to comply with a legal obligation or a lawful request from an authority.
Keeping Your Information Secure
The website is served over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and is hosted on infrastructure that I control and maintain. Access to the server and its logs is limited to me.
How Long I Keep It
Server logs are kept only for as long as they are useful for security and troubleshooting, and are then deleted.
If you contact me by email or telephone using the details on this site and do not go on to become a client, I keep that correspondence only for as long as I reasonably need it, and then delete it.
Your Rights
Under data protection law, you have the right to ask me to:
- Give you a copy of the personal data I hold about you;
- correct it if it is wrong, or complete it if it is incomplete;
- delete it, or restrict or stop how I am using it;
- stop processing it where you object to that processing; and
- where it applies, transfer it to another organisation.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact me using the details below. I will respond within one month.
Data Breaches
If information I hold were ever affected by a security breach, I would report it to the Information Commissioner’s Office where I am required to do so. If the breach were likely to put your rights and freedoms at high risk, I would inform you as soon as I reasonably could.
Changes to This Notice
I may periodically update this notice to reflect changes in my practice or in the law. The version published here is always the current one.
Questions, Concerns and Complaints
If you have any questions about this notice, or you are unhappy with how I have handled your information, please contact me first by email at email@counsellingwithkeith.com, so that I have the opportunity to understand your concern and put things right. You can also read my full Client Privacy Notice.
If you are not satisfied with my response, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s independent authority for data protection. You can contact the ICO at ico.org.uk or by calling 0303 123 1113.
You can view the UK General Data Protection Regulation, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 in full.
